Centre for Gender Studies

The Centre for Gender Studies is an initiative of the Department of English, launched in 2023 under the name Centre for Women’s Studies. It began with the aim of promoting Women’s Studies as an academic discipline and providing a platform for meaningful dialogue, research, and social engagement on issues concerning women’s lives. Key objectives included promoting gender awareness, fostering critical engagement with women’s rights and representation, and encouraging collaborations with academic and non-academic bodies. The Centre also focused on empowering students to lead initiatives and participate in campaigns for social change. One of its significant achievements was the successful launch of a Certificate Course in Women’s Studies, which was completed in March 2024 and was well-received for its inclusive curriculum and participatory approach.

    In 2024, the Centre was reconceptualized as the Centre for Gender Studies to reflect a broader, more inclusive vision aligned with contemporary understandings of gender as a diverse and intersectional category. The renaming marks a shift towards addressing a wider range of gender identities and experiences, beyond the binary framework. The revised objectives of the Centre include promoting Gender Studies as a multidisciplinary academic field, addressing issues of inequality, discrimination, and identity, and creating safe, inclusive spaces for dialogue on gender, sexuality, and power. The Centre also aims to facilitate research, outreach programmes, and collaborations with institutions and civil society organizations engaged in gender-related work. With an emphasis on critical inquiry and social commitment, the Centre for Gender Studies continues to serve as a dynamic space for learning, discussion, and action.
