ACTIVITIES 2023-2024

  • English Association organized an online session “Commemorating the Late Author Milan Kundera” on 18 July 2023 at 6:30 p.m. via Google Meet. The program was conducted to commemorate the death of  late author Milan Kundera and to help the students know more about the author, his works and his contributions to literature and society.
  • Inauguration of the English Association 2023-’24 and Felicitation to M. G. University Rank Holders of B.A. English 2020-’23 batch was held on 22 August 2023.
  • English Association in association with IQAC organized a seminar on the topic “Gaming and Culture: How Gaming Reflects/Shapes Society” on 22 August 2023 at 11:00 a.m. in the P. G. Seminar Hall. The resource person for the day was Ms. Kairali K. K., Assistant Professor, Department of English, Sree Sankara College, Kalady. The lecture was about the connection that games had with our cultures and practices.
  • A quiz competition on Agatha Christie was conducted on 25 September 2023 in Room No.301. The programme was conducted to celebrate the late author’s birthday on 15 September 2023. Ms. Theresa (III B.A. English), the top scorer of the quiz, was given a prize.
  • English Research Forum took initiatives for the following student paper presentations at various conferences:

A paper titled Animated Tales of the Plasticene: A Comparative Inquiry into the Representation of Plastic in Select Indian and American Animations” was presented by Ms. Ann Mary Jeby of III BA English at the “National Seminar on Visual Narratives”, held at BCM College, Kottayam, on 2 February 2024.


A paper titled “Mapping the Interface between Couture and Disability: Problematic Encounters and Contested Sites in Fashion and Consumer ulture” was presented by Ms. Sanjana S of II BA English at the International Conference on “Fashioned Bodies: Couture to Counter-Fashion”, held at Nirmala College, Muvattupuzha, on 11th and 12 January 2024.


Sneha Bhanu Menon (III B. A. English) presented a paper on “”Disposable” Lives and Regal “Death Worlds”: A Reading of the Death and Life of Princess Diana” in the International Seminar held at St. Xavier’s College, Aluva.

  • Research Forum in association with English Association organised a lecture on “Disability Studies: An Introduction through Narratives” was presented by Ms. Reeba Sara Koshy, a Guest Lecturer from St. Thomas College, Kozhencherry, on December 15, 2023. The event aimed at fostering intellectual discourse on contemporary social issues.


  • A workshop on Research Methodology, titled “Academic Writing: Modes and Matter” was organised by Research Forum on 19 January 2024. Smitha M., Assistant Professor, Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam, served as the resource person.


  • The YouTube Channel of Incandescence Language Consultancy Services “The Treasure Trove” was launched on 19 Janury 2024 by Dr.Smitha M., Assistant Professor, Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam. Students are actively working to enrich the channel with more videos and fairy tales, creating an immersive space for literature enthusiasts.


  • Students participated in a lecture on “Neoliberal Feminism and the Crisis of the Nation: Reflections on K.R. Meera’s Ghatakan” delivered by J. Devika, Professor, Centre for Development Studies, Thiruvananthapuram, organised by the Department of English, U. C. College, Aluva on 15 February, 2024.
  • Lecture on “Reimagining Manhood: Exploring Masculinity in Digital Space
     
    A lecture on “Reimagining Manhood: Exploring Masculinity in Digital Space” was delivered by Ms. Abina Sulhath (Assistant Professor, Department of English, MES T.O. Abdulla Memorial College, Kunnukara), an alumna of the Department of English (2018-21 batch) on 19 March 2024. The programme was organized by the English Research Forum and the Centre for Women’s Studies in association with the IQAC. Students of BA English attended the lecture, which explored contemporary concepts of masculinity within digital media. Ms. Sulhath discussed the modes in which digital platforms shape and challenge traditional notions of manhood. The event was well-received, reflecting the ongoing commitment of the Department of English in fostering academic discourse and critical thinking.

 

 

 

 

 

 


  • Summer Camp on Basics in English Grammar and Communication
    Department of English organised a summer camp from 29 April to 04 May 2024, in which 18 students participated enthusiastically. Four students of the Department led the classes with the support of the faculty members. The participants were engaged with worksheets on various components of English grammar such as parts of speech, sentence composition, common usage errors and basic paragraph composition along with group discussions to enhance communication skills.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


  • Lecture on ‘Introduction to Health Humanities’
    English Association organised a webinar on the topic ‘An Introduction to Health Humanities’ in which Dr. Chinmay Murali, Assistant Professor, Department of English, S.D.College, Alappuzha served as the resource person. The lecture focused on the themes such as: tracing the origins, defining the field, difference between Health and Medical Humanities, narrative medicine, pathography and also the research areas in the discipline in addition to the list of journals of medical humanities. The webinar has enabled the participants to understand the interdisciplinary nature and scope of this area. Around 20 participants attended the webinar.

 

 

 

 

 


  • Workshop on Concepts of Acting
    The Playhouse (Drama Club of the Department) in association with IQAC organised a workshop on Concepts of Acting on 28 May 2024. Prof. Ramesh Varma, Head (Retd.), Department of Theatre, Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kalady, led the workshop. The workshop discussed the nuances in acting and performance.


  • 15 II B.A. English students and Ms. Chaithanya Elsa participated in an invited lecture on Neoliberal Feminism and the Crisis of the Nation: Reflections on K.R. Meera’s Ghatakan as part of Women’s Studies Lecture Series organised by Department of English, U.C. College, Aluva on 15 February 2024.

  • Alumni Lecture Series -1 :Workshop on NTA NET

  • Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav Celebration

Date: 17.08.2022

The programme was organized as part of the Independence Day celebrations of the college. The teachers and students of the Department of English decked up as Kashmiris, wearing Salwars, shawls and matching silver ornaments. The students presented a dance performance and did a ramp walk in accordance to their attires, thereby honouring the culture and tradition of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.



  • Webinar on “Independence, Then and Now “

Shri. Renjith Kumar. A. P, Assistant professor, P. G Department of History, Government College, Perambra, Kozhikode, shared his thoughts on the history of our nation.

 


  • Seminar on “Introduction to Research Methodology”

Date: 30.08.2022

Ms. Rose Mary Jose, Senior Research Fellow, P.G department of English, Sacred Heart College, Thevara, introduced various approaches and methods to be undertaken to prepare research papers.

 

 


  • English Association Inauguration

Date: 11.10.2022

Dr. Aravind. R. Nair, Assistant professor, Department of English, Sacred Heart College, Thevara, Ernakulam, served as the resource person for the event. The inaugural session was followed by a lecture on “Tales of the Future: Science Fiction in the Anthropocene.”

 

 


  • Muziris Visit

Date: 13.10.2022

Students of the Department of English visited the Muziris heritate sites, including Paravur Synagogue, Paliyam Palace Museum, Paliyam Nalukettu Museum, Kottapuram Fort, and Azhikode Beach.

 

 


  • Commemoration of “The Rashtriya Ekta Diwas”

Date: 26.10.2022

A presentation was made on the iron man of India Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who unified Indian states together, and a dance of unity was presented on the occasion.

 

 


  • Celebration of “International Women’s Day”

Date: 08.03.2023

A presentation on the most influential women of India and a song praising the worth of woman were the highlights of the programme. The theme of International Women’s Day 2023, “Accelerating Unity,” was also discussed during the programme.

 


  • Literati 2023

Date: 30.03.2023

As part of Literati, the annual interdepartmental literary fest organised by the Department of English, a variety of competitions like poetry writing, character fest, poster making, etc. were conducted. Students actively participated in the programme, showcased their talents and bagged many prizes.
