The Department of Mathematics of Mar Thoma College for Women, Perumbavoor celebrated National Mathematics Day on 2&3 August 2018 in memory of the Great Mathematician ‘Srinivasa Ramanuja’. The objective of the celebration is to sustain, promote and foster the Mathematical Tradition and Culture of India and   the programme is sponsored by Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE)  & DST, Govt. of India. The events began with an inaugural ceremony at 10 am on 2 august at the PG Seminar Hall in the New Block. Dr Sunny Kuriakose, Dean of FISAT, Angamaly and Secretary of Kerala Mathematical Association inaugurated the function and Dr.Lisy Cherian, Principal, MarThoma College for Women, Perumbavoor presided the function. Dr.Anupama.P, Head of the Dept. of Physics and IQAC Coordinator delivered felicitation, Dr.Annie Kurien.K, Head of the Dept. of Mathematics welcomed the gathering and Dr.Gigi George, the programme coordinator proposed vote of thanks.

After the inaugural function, Dr.Sunny  Kuriakose  gave a brief review on the life and achievements of the Mathematics Wizard’ Ramanuja’ and a presentation on the topic “Presence of Mathematics in Nature and its Importance in Everyday Life”.  The presentation inspired all participants to develop an ultimate interest in Mathematics and also to see Math in new and exciting ways.

In the afternoon, an Intercollegiate Mathematics Quiz was conducted for which Dr.SunnyKuriakose himself was the Quiz Master. 16 teams from various colleges participated in the preliminary screening test. On the basis of the screening test, four teams were short listed to participate in the final Quiz, which was conducted in 9 rounds. The team from St.Peter’s College, kolencherry won the first prize, the second prize was bagged by a team from the Host College -MarThoma College for women, Perumbavoor and the third prize went to the team from MA College, Kothamangalam. Winners were awarded cash prizes and certificates. Certificate of participation was given to all participant teams.

In the following day the movie “The Man Who Knew Infinity” was screened.

A ‘Riddle Math Fun’ Competition was also conducted and the winners were given prizes. Staff and students participated in all the programmes with great zeal and enthusiasm. Heartfelt thanks  to every one whose participation made  Math Day  Programme a huge success.
